Ad-Hoc Network and Connection Sharing - WinXP

in Windows XP, you can easily share your internet connection with the other computers via wireless by creating a computer-to-computer (ad-hoc) network. You don’t need an access point or hub/router, all you need are computers with a working wireless.

1. Turn on your wireless in your PC or Notebook. Then Open Control Panel → Network Connection.
2. Right Click on the ‘Wireless Network Connection’ Icon and Select Properties. (Make Sure that the ‘Wireless Network Connection’ are enabled.
3. A new window will appear, select the ‘Wireless Networks’ Tab. Make sure that ‘Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings’ box are checked. Then click the ‘Add…’ button.

4. Name your connection in ‘Network name (SSID)’. If you want to give the network a password, uncheck the ‘The key is provided for me automatically’ box.  Then in ‘Network Authentication’ drop down menu, select Open or Shared if you want to use WEP Network Key. If you want to use WPA Network Key, select ‘WPA-None’ (it’s WPA-PSK on some computer) from the ‘Network Authentication’ drop down menu… If you don’t want to give your network a password, simply select ‘Open’ from the ‘ Network Authentication’ from the drop down menu and ‘Disabled’ in the ‘Data Encryption’

OPTIONAL:
Using WEP as the Network Key
If you want to use WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) as your network key/password, there’s a few things you must keep in mind.

1. You can only use 5 OR 13 characters for password with one type of character (alpahabet or number only).
2. For password with two types of character (alphabet and number), you can only use 10 OR 26 characters.

Using WPA as the Network Key
Just like the WEP, if you want to use WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) as your network key/password, there’s a few thing s that you must keep in mind.

1. You can only use 8 to 63 characters for password with one type of character (alphabet or number only).
2. For password with two types of character (alphabet and number), you can only used 8 to 64 characters

5. Now, we need to make it to an Ad-Hoc Network. Simply give a check on ‘This is a computer-to-computer (ad hoc) wireless; wireless access points are not used’ Box. Then Click OK.

Now for the Internet Connection Sharing.. (I’ll be sharing a Broadband Internet Connection using ADSL Modem in this tutorial)

1. 1st of all, create a new connection for the Broadband Internet. Start → Control Panel → Network Connections, in the left side of the window under the Network Task menu, select ‘Create a new connection’.

2. A new connection wizard will pop-up, Next…
3. Select ‘Connect to the Internet’ → ‘Set up my connection manually’ → ‘Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and password’.
4. You will be asked to type in your ISP name, type in whatever you want here.. It doesn’t matter.. Next..
5.  Then you will be asked to type in your ‘user name’ and ‘password’. Just leave the 2 boxes there and click Next…

6. In the next screen you will be asked if you want to create a shortcut to that connection in the desktop. Just click finished…
7. Now to share the internet connection, open the ‘Network Connections’ again from the Control Panel…  And right clik on our newly created Connection (in this tutorial, it’s “Broadband”) and select Properties..

8. A new window will pop-up, change to ‘Advanced’ tab, and select ‘Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection. And select ‘Wireless Network Connection’ from the ‘Home Network Connection’ drop down menu.
Note: If you want other people on the same network to be able to control or disable the shared internet connection, check ‘Allow other network users to control or disable the shared internet connection’ box..

9. Click ‘OK’ to finish..
10. Now, your internet will be shared to the other computer whenever you start that connection…
